Favourite music of 2019

My annual list of my top 3 LPs and Singles that were released in 2019. The criteria for the singles are that they are from LPs or single releases which don’t feature in the top 3 LP list.

LPs

  1. Dave – Psychodrama
  2. The National – I Am Easy To Find
  3. FKA Twigs – Magdalene

Others on the shortlist were by Marika Hackman (Any Human Friend), Octavian (Endorphins), The Cinematic Orchestra (To Believe), Flume (Hi This Is Flume), Special Request (Offworld) and HTRK (Venus In Leo).

Singles

  1. Special Request – Shepperton Moon Landing
  2. Jhené Aiko – Trigger Protection Mantra
  3. Jacques Greene – Stars

Others on the shortlist were by Telefon Tel Aviv (Standing At The Bottom Of The Ocean), Thom Yorke (Not The News – Mark Pritchard Remix), Paul Epworth (Voyager) and Koffee (Toast – Clipz Bootleg).

Live performance

This was the year I fell into the lobster pot that is The National, and was privileged to see them twice in December, within a few days of each other, in Brighton and Nottingham. The Brighton gig has to be up there with one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to a lot over the years. I took some photos of the gigs.

Mixes

One of my favourite mixes of the year came early on, with DBridge’s Fader Mix. I probably listened to this one more than any other mixes.

Radio

I’ve listened to quite a lot of shows on BBC 6 Music this year, including Steve Lamacq who introduced me to the brilliant Marika Hackman, and Iggy Pop for an eclectic mix of different music. My favourite shows from NTS Radio were probably those by Obongjayar.
